  • What is an Apple ID? It is a unique account that new Apple users have to create. This account is used to sign in to all your Apple devices.
  • Account recovery contact is an account of someone else that is used to verify your identity. The very purpose of this contact is to regain access to your account when you are locked out of your account.
  • Two-factor authentication is a method that uses two-piece of your personal information to gain access to an account.

So, you have purchased a new iPhone. You are excited to get started. But… You don’t remember your Apple ID and are wondering how to login into your new Apple device. My mother was in the same situation a few days back, so I can thoroughly relate to the situation. But the good news is that I was able to set up the login to my mother’s device using Apple ID recovery.

I researched a lot on the topic from scratch and thought of sharing my experience with you all. To someone stuck with the same issue, here is a step-by-step guide to recovering or finding your Apple ID back. No, you do not need any background in technology to follow the Apple ID recovery process.

Just follow the step-by-step procedure.

Part 1: Forgot Apple ID? How To Recover?

What is an Apple ID? It is a unique account that new Apple users have to create. This account is used to sign in to all your Apple devices. Your Apple ID has a username and password used to access all Apple services like iCloud, iTunes, App Store, Apple Books, and others.

There are many ways to recover your Apple ID.

Method 1 Recover Apple ID Using The Apple Account Website

  1. Go to the Apple Account website at account.apple.com.
  2. Click on Sign In, then choose the option for forgotten account details if you don't remember your sign-in.
  3. On the next page, click on Forgot password? or the option for forgotten account details.
  4. Now enter the requested details, such as your name, email address, or phone number, and click on Continue.
  5.
  6. Check your inbox for receipts, support emails, or billing emails from Apple if you still need to confirm the account.
  7.
  8. Use the information Apple shows or emails you to confirm which Apple Account is yours.

Method 2 Recover Apple ID If You Are Signed In On Other Apple Devices

Do you have more than one Apple device in your name? You may already be signed in on another iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or Windows PC with iCloud for Windows.

If yes, read ahead to know how you can recover the Apple ID from a device that is already signed in.

  1. If you have an iPad, iPhone, or iPod, go to Settings on any device.
  2. Tap on your name, then open Sign-In & Security.
  3. If you are already signed in, you will see the email addresses or phone numbers that can be used with that Apple Account.
  4. If not, check whether you are signed in through the App Store or other Apple services on that device. On a Mac, you can also check System Settings under your name.

That covers the cases where you forgot the account name itself. But what if you remember the Apple ID and do not remember the password? Read on for the Apple-supported reset paths.

Part 2: Forgot Apple ID Password? How To Reset?

Method 1: Use Account Recovery Contact To Reset Apple ID Password

What is account recovery contact? It is a trusted person you add in advance who can help verify your identity if you get locked out of your Apple Account.

Do you remember who your account recovery contact is? If yes, read ahead and follow the steps to reset your Apple ID password. If no, skip this and go to method 2.

Your account recovery contact would usually be your close family member or friend who also uses an Apple device. Ask such a person to help you out. These steps are to be performed by your account recovery contact:

  1. Using iPhone, iPad, or Mac, go to Settings or System Settings
  2. Then tap on your name
  3. Go to Sign-In and Security> Account Recovery
  4. Tap on the contact you want to reset your Apple ID password for.
  5. Then tap Get Recovery Code
  6. You need to give the received code to your friend.
  7. The person needs to enter the code to reset their password.

This method works only if account recovery contact was set up in advance. The contact must be over 13, use iOS 15, iPadOS 15, macOS 12, or later, have two-factor authentication turned on, and have a device passcode set. If you want to set an account recovery contact for the future, follow the steps on either iPhone, iPad, or iPod:

  1. Go to device Settings> tap on your name
  2. Go to Sign-In and Security> Recovery Contacts
  3. Under Recovery Assistance, tap on Add Recovery Contact
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to set up your account recovery contact.

Method 2: Via Two-Factor Authentication To Reset Apple ID Password

Another method to reset Apple ID password is through two-factor authentication. This is Apple's standard trusted-device method when you still have access to one of your signed-in devices.

But for this to work, you need to make sure you have previously set up two-factor authentication. If not, I will tell you how to set it because it is a very useful method in case you need to reset your password again in the future.

Here is how to use two-factor authentication to reset Apple ID password:

Steps:

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Tap on your name> Sign-In and Security> Change password
  3. Enter the passcode (i.e., password that unlocks the device) of your device when prompted
  4. Follow the steps as prompted to reset your Apple ID password. Apple may require a short security delay on some devices before the password change is allowed.

Pros:

  • Apple’s trusted method
  • Easy to follow

Cons:

  • Confusion between two-factor authentication and two-step verification
  • Not applicable if two-factor authentication is not set up

Tip: Here is how you can set a two-factor authentication:

Steps:

  1. On your iPhone, iPad or iPod, go to Settings
  2. Tap on your name and then Sign-In and Security
  3. Tap on Turn On Two-Factor Authentication> Continue
  4. Enter your phone number (i.e., phone number you want to receive verification code on to sign in)
  5. Tap Next
  6. Enter the verification code you just received on your phone number.
  7. This will turn on two-factor authentication.

Method 3: Use Someone Else’s Device To Reset Your Password

Just like you can use someone else’s device to help find your Apple ID, you can do the same to reset your Apple ID password.

You can use someone else’s device like iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to reset your password, and Apple's current recommended borrowed-device method is the Apple Support app.

Using Apple Support App

For this, your friend or family member should have the Apple Support app downloaded on their device. If not, ask them to download it from the App Store.

  1. Open the Apple Support app
  2. Go to Support Tools> Reset Password
  3. Tap Help Someone Else
  4. Enter the Apple ID for which password is to be reset, then tap Continue
  5. Use the email address or phone number linked to that Apple ID
  6. Tap Next.
  7. Follow the on-screen prompts until your password is reset.

Using Find My iPhone App

  1. Open the Find My iPhone app on your friend/family device
  2. A sign-in screen appears.  Make sure the Apple ID field is empty. If you see someone else's username, erase it.
  3. Tap on Forgot Apple ID or password and follow the on-screen prompts.

But what if you don’t have another trusted Apple device, changed or lost a trusted phone number, or can’t complete the normal checks? The above methods can start to look futile in such a case.

Worse, even if you have access to your device, it might be unusable because you don't have the Apple ID password or your account is locked. Many features of your iPhone may be disabled.

At that stage, Apple's own account recovery flow on iforgot.apple.com may still be the safer next step, although it can take several days or longer. If you need a device-side removal route instead, the article also includes the LockAway option below.

Method 4: Use Mobitrix Lockaway To Reset Apple ID Password Without Trusted Phone Number

Mobitrix Lockaway uses a different approach altogether. You do not have to remember a single thing, no strings are attached when using this method to reset Apple ID.

Part 3: Frequently Asked Questions About "Apple ID Recovery"

How can I recover my Apple ID without email and password?

You can recover Apple ID by using an account recovery contact if you set one up in advance. If not, the usual Apple fallback is account recovery through iforgot.apple.com, which can take time. Another method is by using Mobitrix Lockaway.

Is my Apple ID my email address?

When creating an Apple account, you normally use an email address or, in some cases, a phone number. That sign-in is the username of your Apple ID, now called Apple Account. You can check the email addresses or phone numbers already linked to your account in Settings, System Settings, or emails from Apple.

Summary

As a tech enthusiast, these were some possible methods I came across to recover your Apple ID. For some, you need either a username or password. For others, you may need other security authentication information. If by any means, you do not have access to any of such information, your last resort has to be to delete your existing Apple ID by using Mobitrix Lockaway.
